The Oreck AirInstinct is a very sharp-looking small to medium sized room air cleaner that comes with a basic 3-stage filtration system that incorporates a true HEPA filter. And while it’s filtration methods are not revolutionary, one of the greatest things about this unit is its automatic particle sensing technology, which lets the air cleaner run on virtual auto-pilot. But that’s not all that’s noteworthy about the Oreck – nor is it the only option in its class that we’d recommend. Please read on for more information about this air cleaner, including how well we think it stacks up to the competition.
Oreck AirInstinct 75 Specifications
The Oreck AirInstinct 75 Smart Air Purifier uses a three stage air cleaning system. The first stage is a pre-filter that catches larger items, like hair, large dust particles, and lint. This pre-filter is also important for sparing the other stages from clogging.
The second stage uses a activated carbon media. Activated carbon is used primarily for odor control, as it can absorb things like smoke, chemical fumes, pet and cooking odors, and foul or musty smells generally.
The third stage is where the bulk of the actual filtration takes place – this stage passes air through a High Efficiency Particulate Arresting (“HEPA”) filter that can capture and retain fine airborne particles down to 0.3 microns in size, and with 99.97% efficiency, thus meeting the general standard for “true” HEPA filters. This stage is where things like fungi, bacteria, pollen and other allergens are removed from the air. Notably, the HEPA filter media is designed to be used (under typical conditions) for 2-years before needing replacement, which is a great for keeping down operating expenses.
In addition to good, albeit basic 3-stage filtration, the AirInstinct brings interesting “smart” technology. This air cleaner incorporates an “Automatic Particle Sensor” feature that monitors room air and, based on the level of particulate matter detected, adjusts cleaning power (fan speed) as necessary to maintain air quality. And the progress of the air cleaning can be determined at a glance with the unit’s 3-color lighted indicator. The great benefit of this auto-mode is that you can turn the unit on and let it go to work with virtually no monitoring.
Other noteworthy features of the AirInstinct 75 is its Energy Star rating for efficiency, a programmable timer (1, 4 & 8 hour run times), a relatively quiet fan, and an overall crisp and modern look that should complement any modern home or office space.
This unit is recommended for small to medium sized rooms up to 250 square feet in size; each purchase is backed by a 3-year limited warranty.
Oreck AirInstinct 75 Reviews & Ratings
The AirInstinct 75 currently holds an average user satisfaction rating of 4.4 out of 5 stars on amazon.com based on 7 reviews. Obviously, this is not a very lengthy track record of reviews; however, so far they have been nearly all 5-star. The reviewers, some of whom claimed brand loyalty to Oreck products, loved the performance and look of this filter, and particularly appreciated the automatic particle sensing system. There was only one negative review, by an individual that claimed the unit emitted a strange odor and make lots of fan noise during operation.
Concluding Thoughts & Opinions
The Oreck AirInstinct 75 is definitely a very capable and “smart” HEPA air purifier for small to medium sized rooms that should meet or exceed the expectations of most users. Consequently, we’d recommend it to anyone considering this model, especially if you are faithful to Oreck products.
However, if you are still shopping around and are interested in an equally “smart” unit that we think provides a bit more value and is just as attractive, we suggest you check out the Coway AP-1012GH Smart Air Purifier. The AP-1012GH looks like the Oreck; has an automatic particle sensing system like the Oreck; and uses a high-quality HEPA filter like the Oreck. However, the Coway has a 4-stage filtration system, which includes an ionizer that the Oreck doesn’t. In addition, the Coway uses a HEPA media that last for 3-years (compared to 2-years for the Oreck). Finally, the Coway AP-1012GH covers a similar sized room, is currently less expensive than the Oreck, and has even better reviews.
