While it certainly won’t win any awards for its boxy styling, the Hunter 30378 HEPAtech large room air purifier uses well-establish technologies that deliver outstanding small particulate and odor control. Moreover, it achieves this in a unit that is significantly less expensive to buy and operate than other comparable HEPA air cleaners. To learn more about this very affordable yet powerful air filter, please keep reading.
Hunter 30378 HEPATech Specifications
The Hunter 30378 HEPAtech comes with simple, yet tried and true air 3-stage cleaning technology. The first stage subjects air to a carbon pre-filter. This pre-filter uses a relatively coarse media that catches and retains larger dust, debris and other objects, like lint and hair, to prevent clogging of the later filter stage. Notably, this pre-filter also includes a layer of activated carbon, which is one of the oldest and most effective technologies ever used for odor control. As such, this filter will combat cigarette smoke, pet odors, cooking smells, chemical fumes, and general musty/offensive odors.
This filter system has an impressive 260 CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate) for smoke, dust and pollen; in addition, it has a strong air flow, changing 6X/hr for a 19′ x 21′ room. Consequently, it can be used for large rooms up to approximately 400 square feet.
The second stage is the HEPAtech filter media. This is a very fine matrix media that is capable of removing particulate matter down to 0.1 microns with 99.97% efficiency – this impressive, and is actually much better than the minimum standards set forth by the Department of Energy for labeling a filter as a “true” HEPA filter, which only require similar efficiency for particles down to 0.3 microns. This is important, because it’s the very fine particles, such as dust, fungal spores, bacteria, pollen, viruses, and other pathogens or irritants, that most easily stay airborne and lodge in airways, so the HEPAtech is actually an outstanding filter for allergy sufferers.
Thirdly, the 30378 HEPAtech includes an ionizer feature. Ionizers generate and deploy negatively charged ions into the air that bind to very fine particles, like smoke, pollen and dust, causing them to stick to each other (making them easier to be caught in the filter medium) or simply precipitate (i.e., fall) out of the air, where they can’t get into your lungs.
In addition to effective particulate and odor control, the HEPAtech has a nice filter replacement calendar – a digital display that shows you how much life is left in the filter and when it needs replacement. This is a key feature in our view, since no filter works well when it’s clogged!
Finally, this air purifier is actually very quiet. It uses a low noise, 3-speed fan that allows you to enjoy great air quality without much of the noise issues that plague other units.
Hunter 30378 HEPAtech Reviews & Ratings
The HEPAtech has gotten outstanding reviews, currently averaging a satisfaction rating of 4.3 out of 5 stars on amazon.com based on 58 reviews. Reviewers give this filter nearly 5-stars across the board for great and reliable performance. There were many comments about how silently this unit runs on the lowest fan speed as well.
Another persistent theme among the reports was value. Many users specifically mentioned how much money they save with this unit compared to others with similar capabilities. In particular, there were several users who indicated they were fashioning their own replacement filters by cutting them out of bulk rolls of filter media. Although this can be done, make sure that such DIY filters fit precisely in the unit so you don’t have air bypassing the media.
There were very few negative remarks about this filter, although some consumers complained about the price of replacement media (a problem with virtually all HEPA models) and that the unit was noisy at the higher fans speeds.
Concluding Thoughts & Opinions
The Hunter 30378 HEPAtech Air Purifier is not flashy, not particularly attractive to look at, and does nothing revolutionary. However, this filter works extremely well on very small particulates and odors, is very reliable, can cover a large room, and is significantly less expensive to purchase and operate that most other units that deliver similar performance. This makes it an outstanding deal in our view, especially if you looking to maximize the bang for your buck. And while just about every HEPA filter is going to require replacement media when run regularly, the simple shape and design of this unit gives you lots of options as far as using bulk media if you are the DIY type.
