The Honeywell HFD310 AirGenius4 is a very capable tower air cleaner that cleans and circulates air well. Moreover, it’s very cost-effective and inexpensive to run thanks to a permanent, electrostatic filter. However, individuals who are prone to respiratory ailments should consider carefully this model’s pros and cons, before purchasing, including its somewhat reduced efficiency on very fine particulates compared to a traditional HEPA filter. For more information and our thoughts on the AirGenius4, please keep reading.
Honeywell HFD310 AirGenius4 Specifications
The AirGenius4 is designed for small to mid-sized rooms up to 250 square feet in area. This filter can take down particulates with 99.9% efficiency for particles down to 0.3 microns in size. And while this is very good, this is not a “true” HEPA air cleaner, which under prevailing standards set forth by the Department of Energy, requires 99.97% efficiency for particles 0.3 or larger. Yes, this 0.07 difference may seem trivial; however, it is these super-fine particles that do the most damage to lungs and airways, so the higher the efficiency the better.
This air cleaner uses 3 stages of filtration – a simple foam pre-filter; an odor controlling pre-filter (optional); and a primary “IFD” filter that does virtually all of the work on fine particulate matter.
The pre-filter works by catching larger lint and debris, and the odor pre-filter uses a media that absorbs odors, smoke, fumes and other volatile organic compounds and gases. This optional, odor control filter requires replacement periodically as the media exhausts, or every 3 months under typical conditions. The foam pre-filter is washable and does not need replacement.
The main IFD filter is a permanent, washable type that appears to use electrostatic precipitation. It is not a HEPA filter, nor does it use mechanical filtration. Electrostatic precipitators typically ionize incoming particles and then direct them to an oppositely-charged collector plate upon which they become bound to and thereby “precipitate” out of the air. As we stated above, although this filter in the AirGenius4 is not technically as efficient as a true HEPA filter, the fact that it is permanent and reusable is a really a great thing, since HEPA filter media replacements can be costly.
Aside from good filtration and 2 permanent, reusable filters, the AirGenius4 is quite loaded with other nice features, such as a programmable timer (2, 4 & 8-hour settings); a total of 4-cleaning levels (general cleaning, allergen mode, sleep, and maximum power); and an Allergen Intelligence “smart” mode that senses when additional power is needed. Also nice is this model’s oscillating tower and touch-sensitive control pad.
The HFD310 AirGenius4 has a CADR (“Clean Air Delivery Rate” ) of 161 for tobacco smoke, 161 for dust and 170 for pollen. It has been AHAM-certified for use in small to medium-sized spaces/rooms up to approximately 250 square feet in area.
This filter is backed by a generous 5-year limited warranty.
Honeywell HFD310 AirGenius4 Reviews
The AirGenius4 has an outstanding track record of reviews, and currently holds an average satisfaction rating of 4.3 out of 5 stars on amazon.com based on 44 reviews. Overall, people praise this filter’s quiet operation, great air flow, oscillating tower, timer function, reusable filters and solid air-cleaning performance. Indeed, many of the users were allergy sufferers, and noted fast improvement in home air quality with this model.
There were only a handful of negative comments, which focused mainly on the size of the unit and some reports of loud fan noise or strange smells emanating from the filter. Beyond these stray comments, however, the reviews were typically very positive and mainly 5-star.
Concluding Thoughts & Opinions
The Honeywell HFD310 AirGenius4 is a great choice for small to mid-sized rooms up to 250 square feet in size. This filter not only cleans the air well, but is very inexpensive to operate, with a permanent, washable primary filter and foam pre-filter. Indeed, the only replacement item, if you need it, is the odor-pre-filter. Considering how much replacement HEPA filter media costs, this translates into great savings over the life of the unit.
Having said all that, however, if you are a serious allergy/asthma sufferer and/or desire a higher level of air filtration, then we’d suggest you stick with a true HEPA unit, which delivers slightly better fine particle capturing compared to the AirGenius. For an inexpensive true HEPA model that also covers up to 250 square feet and is very well-designed, consider the Coway AP-1012GH Smart Air Purifier, which uses a very long-lived HEPA media that needs replacement only once every 3-years under normal circumstances.
