Although it may be overkill for some, there are many that need a larger air cleaner that has very high efficiency and can handle larger rooms. For these people – including individuals that suffer from allergies and other respiratory ailments, the Blueair 503 HepaSilent air purifier is, quite literally, a breath of fresh air. Blueair 503 HepaSilent Specifications
The Swiss-designed Blueair 503 is a very powerful and high-tech air cleaner that leverages traditional HEPA filtration along with electrostatic technology to achieve better results and with less energy and noise.
The heart of the Blueair 503 is its “HepaSilent” system. This technology essentially uses electrostatic forces to capture the smallest particulate matter, along with an innovative low-density HEPA filter media. The result is that this filter achieves as good or better than standard true HEPA efficiency (99.97% for particles down to 0.3 microns) but with less energy. How? Well, typical HEPA filters use a very tight filter matrix, since they are unaided by the Blueair’s electrostatic system and must rely completely on mechanical filtration. As a result, your typical filter must push harder against the denser filter media to force air to pass through at a sufficient rate to maintain proper Clean Air Deliver Rates (“CADRs”). The HepaSilent system, however, doesn’t require a dense filter media, so air passes more easily through the matrix, which in turn puts less strain on the fan and results in lower energy costs and much less fan noise as well.
This filter has 3 speeds and can handle very large rooms. In fact, with CADRs of 375 for dust, pollen and smoke, this air cleaner can easily accommodate a room of approximately 580 square feet in size. And these are not simply boastful statistics – these are figures based on test results certified through independent testing done by the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM).
Moreover, this unit is very durable and solidly-constructed, with a galvanized steel frame and high-quality feel throughout. Each Blueair 503 is backed by a 5 year limited warranty.
Not surprisingly, given its unique filtration system, this filter easily earns the Energy Star rating. It is estimated that the cost to run this unit is equivalent to the power needed to run a light bulb.
Nor is this model short on “smart” features. It comes with an electronic display and sophisticated particle & gas sensors that constantly monitor room air quality to ensure that the filter is working properly. Just look for the blue light to confirm that the unit is operating. It also lets you know when a filter replacement is needed.
Finally, there is no need for concern about the use of an electrostatic filter. On the contrary, Blueair air cleaners are not only completely ozone-free, during testing it was confirmed that they in fact lowered existing levels of ozone in the room.
Blueair 503 HepaSilent Reviews
The Blueair 503 has earned a fantastic average satisfaction rating of 4.5 out of 5.0 stars based on 32 amazon.com reviews. Approval scores like this are very hard to come buy in any home appliance.
Users gave the Blueair high marks for its stunning air-cleaning power; outstanding design; virtually all-metal construction; and its very quiet operation – particularly on the two lowest fan speeds. Notably, many of the reviewers were allergy sufferers or had serious air quality problems (e.g., black mold and dead mice in the attic), yet each noted that the 503 performed perfectly, controlling smells and stopping further allergic reactions.
Given that this unit has a near perfect 5-star record, there were very few negative comments among the reviews. Among them, however, the most consistent negative remarks focused on this unit’s admittedly stiff price and noise levels at the highest fan settings. Beyond that, there were only a couple stray, truly negative reviews, but in our opinion these seemed odd and untrustworthy, especially when compared to the rest of the reports.
Concluding Thoughts & Opinions
The Blueair 503 is certainly not an inexpensive air cleaner, but it’s worth extra cost in our view for several reasons. This air purifier has very high CADRs, making it capable of cleaning very large rooms. Moreover, it’s extremely energy efficient and can run almost silently when set on the two lowest fan speeds. This model also features modern controls and a sophisticated pollutant sensor that monitors performance so there’s no “guessing” if it’s actually maintaining air quality. Also, in case you haven’t noticed, this thing is built like a tank – and a stylish one at that!
But most of all, the Blueair 503 works extremely well at pulling down odors and fine particulates, and it does so while processing large volumes of air and with unusual efficiency. As such, for those plagued by allergies or chronic poor home air quality, we think this filter is worth every penny.
